Kāpiti showed strong support at Thursday evening’s meeting at Otaihanga Boating Club. A quick head count confirmed 150+ people with more arriving during the meeting. The room was packed.

The Council did not advertise the event—it was left to Otaihanga.com to inform local residents at short notice.

Special thanks to those who spread the word via emails, website, social media posts, and completing a mail drop—all within 3 days!

And of course, thanks to our fellow community for their support, spreading the word, and bringing their friends and family along.

Key Points from the Meeting:

Impressive turnout at the meeting despite limited notice.

Mayor Janet Holborow explained it was unusual for a council CEO, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and senior staff to attend such an event.

She did not clarify why they all attended, but it suggests the Council is paying attention to the voices of the people.

Please keep sharing your views, such as emailing councillors (you can do this via our website); this is crucial!

The meeting aimed to provide a voice for all residents. Notably, no one expressed support for the proposed development project.

KCDC planners had previously recommended a full structural plan for Otaihanga, but it will not proceed

Residents voiced frustration over the lack of better planning!

Infrastructure concerns were raised, particularly around transport, schools, and medical care. Mayor Holborow acknowledged these issues but stated they fall under government jurisdiction.

The Council is responsible for local infrastructure like roads, water supply, and stormwater systems, funded by rates and developer contributions.

Concerns arose over who will cover the costs for council infrastructure. Developers contribute, but the exact figure for this project was not disclosed.

Darren Edwards mentioned the council has a well-planned budget, which should ease some community concerns.

Residents were frustrated by the Council’s refusal to discuss the Mansell Development application, comparing it to a court proceeding.

James Jefferson was unaware that the statutory clock had stopped, but he promised an update via email early next week.

The Council stated the Mansell Development issue was taken over by the government, advising residents to take their concerns to the MP. However, the MP has directed residents to the Mayor. This remains unresolved.

Several councillors attended, including the Waikanae Community Board Chair, who happens to be a family member of the development project.

Residents expressed frustration over not receiving replies to their emails from elected members.

We now wait to see how the Council will handle this application, including what they approve as discretionary, what does not comply, and whether the development will be publicly notified for public submissions.
